While he turned down pumpkin pie yesterday, a trim 57-year-old named Dave enjoyed a plate of turkey and fixings at the Salvation Army’s annual Thanksgiving meal in Framingham. Joining the Salvation Army in hosting dinners and delivering meals were the the Woodville Rod & Gun Club in Hopkinton, the Amvets in Hudson, Outpost Farm in Holliston and the police in Ashland, among others. At the Curtis family’s 21st annual feast at Framingham’s Eagles Club, organizers reported seeing a number of new faces this year, with a variety of ethnic groups and families mixing with veterans and those relying on social services. Hostess Karen Curtis attributed the surge to economic hardship, pointing to the fact there wasn’t room in the dining hall for her own family to reserve a table, a past practice. At the Salvation Army, volunteer Lee Segall described how someone had donated a much-needed $100 collection of plastic utensils and plates for the meal and how Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Dunkin’ Donuts, Red Barn Coffee Roasters and Cafe Bagels had all contributed. read more
