Cruise tune-up: Organizers make move to raise revenue (Crain’s Detroit Business)- Car Auction News
The nonprofit representing the nine communities along the cruise route has signed eBay Motors and another national company, Turtle Wax , to sponsorships for the 2008 Dream Cruise on Aug. WDC is organizing a car auction through eBay Motors, in addition to the company's new cruise sponsorship, and a new classic car show with 10 trophy spots open to sponsorships. WDC also plans to offer a new VIP registration, in partnership with the Motor Cities National Heritage Area, a nonprofit organization aiming to help increase visibility of metro Detroit's car culture and all things automotive. WDC's new “Dream Show” classic car event, which takes place the day of the cruise, will allow companies to sponsor one of 10 trophies that WDC is hoping will become as coveted as the Ridler Award at Autorama , Tanner said. WDC also plans this year to issue its first Dream Cruise program, a 75- to 100-page, full-color glossy booklet that will include the history of the cruise and a cover story about the event's first grand marshal, Tanner said. Tanner projects the new program, the classic car show, the eBay Motors sponsorship and classic car auction will bring in at least $125,000. read more

Interest in solar power shining bright in New Jersey, Pennsylvania (The Philadelphia Inquirer)- Topic: Car Auction News
On any sunny day at the Pennsauken Landfill, 13,000 solar panels sit quietly atop 15 acres of sealed-up garbage, pumping out the power. Besides its environmental benefits, solar energy bolsters the regional power grid by making the most energy when the need is greatest – those sunny summer afternoons when air conditioners are sucking maximum juice. The boom is further fueled – or perhaps forced – by 27 states that have annually raised requirements for the percentage of energy coming from renewable sources, such as wind or solar. What makes the Mid-Atlantic region so attractive to solar developers is that several states, including Pennsylvania and New Jersey, have made specific requirements for solar. Solar proponents think there is so much potential here that the organizers of a national conference on solar power opted to bring the event to Philadelphia next year. When the conglomerate Cox Enterprises decided to look into solar power, it wound up putting 705 panels – enough to power 12 homes – atop the roof of an auto-reconditioning shop in Bordentown owned by a division, Manheim, a car auction dealer. read more

Yelm man wins car auction award (The Olympian)- About: Car Auction News
Maybe Dan Schorno of Yelm couldn’t sell a sport utility vehicle to an environmentalist, but he was good enough this past weekend in Spokane to win the World Automobile Auctioneers Championship. His dad, Larry, also of Yelm, auctioned off livestock and farm sales while Dan Schorno was a kid. The Spokane judges scored about 65 competitors on product knowledge, appearance, bid-call ability and professionalism involving the buyer-seller. Dan Schorno, who has been an auctioneer for 20 years, said to win it took luck and no mistakes. read more
