Classic cars roll into fairgrounds (Salem Statesman Journal)(Car Auction News)

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

It might be too cold still for a good, old-fashioned outdoor car show, and if you are a motor fanatic, it can be a long, cold winter. Fortunately, the Petersen Classic Car Auction will help break through the winter doldrums Saturday inside the Jackman-Long Building at the Oregon State Fairgrounds. Among the notables will be a 1914 Model T pickup, a 1962 Chevy Nova and a 1966 Harley-Davidson with a sidecar. Susan Davis with the auction group said it’s difficult to know what collectors will bring to the show. Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Otis Bowen declared a snow emergency and more than 1,000 Indiana National Guard personnel were mobilized to help stranded travelers, snowbound workers and families whose homes had lost heat and electricity. Dean Kruse, the owner of car auction company Kruse International in Auburn, recalled being stuck in a rental car with three friends, all worried that they might freeze to death. Leaving the car with wind chills more than 40 degrees below zero would have been suicide, so they waited in their car, which quickly was nearly buried in snow. In a recollection published Friday in The News-Sentinel of Fort Wayne, Kruse recalled their growing desperation, including how they ate snow to stay hydrated and sang “99 bottles of beer on the wall” to stay warm. read more
