When 30,000 people turned out for the Racers Reunion at Columbia Speedway in 2009, what was to have been a one-time affair became an annual event. The Love Chevrolet Racers Reunion returns April 14-17, celebrating the history of stock-car racing and the track’s role in that history, organizers announced Thursday. The first Racers Reunion had been planned in three months, and Jeff Gilder, creator of RacersReunion. Sellers is part-owner of the half-mile, dirt-track speedway where Richard Petty ran his first race, and Studebaker and Chevrolet cars got their first NASCAR victories. As it was last year, the centerpiece of the celebration is the candlelight track walk, honoring drivers who raced at Columbia, and an autograph session with a host of legends including David Pearson, Humpy Wheeler and Haskel Willingham. Tony Banks, of the West Metro Business Center, said although Racers Reunion is no longer free – a four-day pass is $10 – organizers hope it will have the same draw. read more
